How It Works
Prisonchess
The Danish Prisonchess programme is a collaboration between the Danish prison service and the Danish Scholastic Chess Federation.
Participation is voluntary for inmates and prison staff. Two instructors at each prison lead a weekly 90-minute session with support from the GAMBIT® digital teaching system. Learning, practice, play and reflection give each meeting a clear rhythm.

More Than A Game
Skills For The Board.
Skills For Life.
01
Focus
Players learn to pause, assess their options and consider consequences before acting.
02
Connection
A shared game creates conversations across prison units and supports constructive relations with staff.
03
Safety
Clear rules, calm attention and positive interaction help reduce distance and everyday friction.
Dynamic Security
Safety Built Through Relationships
Professional relationships, communication and a stable daily environment create security—not physical control alone.
When inmates and staff learn and play together, it creates room for dialogue, trust and a better understanding of one another.
