Chess facilitates exactly this. The game requires mutual respect, silence, and adherence to a shared set of rules. As staff and inmates engage with or observe the weekly sessions, traditional barriers and hierarchical tensions are temporarily suspended. This shared experience significantly improves the overall prison environment, reducing everyday friction and behavioral conflicts.
